Sapphire and I are standing in the pit listening to Kimya sing about gerbils when she nudges me, “I have to pee.”
I grumble because I was really getting into the quirky gerbil puns that Kimya had been making. But since, a everyone knows, girls are incapable of going to the bathroom alone, I have no choice but to follow her. When we get to the bathroom, I am surprised to see a drunk girl sitting on the floor in the splits position. Sapphire bolts into the nearest stall because she really needs to pee. But, because I am in no rush, I survey the stranger.
"I just broke up with my boyfriend! I feel so alive!” She greets me. “Do you have a boyfriend?”
Her blonde hair is sticking to the sweaty parts of her face and the glittery make up that she is wearing is smeared down the sides of her face. Her fish net tights are ripped around the crotch. She keeps pulling her over-sized My Chemical Romance t-shirt over her crotch in an attempt to conceal her “hot mess express-ness", however, it’s too late because I have already seen her goods. Silently I marvel to myself about how she can feel that good and look like that.
“Sorry, that my tights are kind of ruined. It’s been a crazy night,” she trills.
“Yeah,” I reply answering her question. I am thinking about the boring guy that I have been seeing for the last eight months who recently moved away to Victoria, BC for work. “He lives in BC though.”
“That's so lame!” she cries out. “You should call things off!” “You can do way better – you're so hot!”
I laugh. It’s funny that she says this because for the last month I had been entertaining it but I hadn't been able to work up the guts to do so. But, in this moment her words feel like a sign from above. Sapphire opens the door of her stall and walks over to the sink to wash her hands.
“Are you going to break up with your boyfriend?” She asks hopping in to the conversation. “I know you’ve been thinking about it for a while.”
“I think I have to,” I reply with a shrug motioning to the drunk girl. “The bathroom angel told me so.” She shoots me finger guns, however, because she is extremely wasted, they look more like finger worms.
“I think I want to break up with my boyfriend too,” Sapphire says.
I stare at her, shocked by what she is saying. She has been with her boyfriend for three years. The first time we met she said that she wanted to marry him.
She shrugs, "we've been having some problems. I'll tell you about them after the show."
It's those moments that will stick with you forever. No longer did Sapphire feel like some girl I had met on an app. Because we shared such a similar desire, she was more. Finally, we had had our bonding moment. Now, I had a best friend. We left the bathroom and went to catch the final couple songs of the show. The drunk girl shoots us one last finger worm to show her solidarity.
