14. Resolution

Writer's picture: Annie W.Annie W.

A few days later, I asked Sapphire if she wanted to come to my house and talk things over. She said yes and I was grateful. Even if I had lost my friendship with Sabrina, maybe I could still salvage things with Sapphire.

We sat on my bed the following day starring at each other but not knowing what to say. "Do you want some wine?" I asked, deadly scared of the silence between us.

"No, I'm okay," she said.

"Are you sure? I have a bottle of white wine in the fridge right now. I know that's your favourite."

"No, I'm not drinking tonight."

"Okay."

"So, do you want to start or should I?" Sapphire asked. I shrugged, not wanting to make the first move but also not wanting for things to remain as deadly quiet as they currently were.

Sapphire picked at pink tassels that decorated my duvet cover. I did too. Until finally, I decided to swallow my pride and speak up.

I explained to her the reason why I was upset. But she didn't get it. "I don't know why you're mad," she kept repeating "no one else in my life is upset that I am in a relationship."

"Well, you don't mean the same to them as you mean to me."

And then she said those five, dreadful words again, "this sounds like a YOU problem."

'Resolution' by Annie Wildemann (me).

I was trying to keep my cool, but it was hard considering how upset I was. I couldn't believe that this person I loved so much was telling me that the feelings I felt weren't valid. "I think we need to take a break from being friends for a while," I told her, struggling to take gulps of air through my tears.
