For the next couple of weeks, Sapphire and I are Venus and Earth orbiting each other. We go on friend dates and eagerly send texts in an effort to really get to know the other person. I thought that things were going well, but I was nervous because we hadn’t really bonded yet. My anxiety disorder told me that this was “bad” and I should “give up before I get hurt”. However, the rational ten percent of my brain told me to just be patient and wait for things to work out– so I did.
For our fourth date, Sapphire and I decided to see a concert at the Starlite Room. The Starlite Room is a small, intimate music venue located in downtown Edmonton, Alberta. We had bonded over our mutual affection for the alternative folk artist, Kimya Dawson, on our second date, and so, when we heard that she was going to be playing in Edmonton the following month, we decided to buy tickets.
Sitting in her car, the awkwardness of new friendship hung over like a veil. We didn’t talk for the entire ride and I mentally cursed myself for not being better company. I thought, maybe we would be better friends if I wasn’t so awkward and terrible. Gosh, I hate myself. In the background, the indie-folk artist, Father John Misty wails to a beat that is equally as melodramatic as my feelings.
When we arrive at the venue, I ask Sapphire if she wants a drink which I tell her is my treat to make up for the awkwardness I felt I had caused.
“I didn’t think it was that awkward,” she laughs, “but I’ll take a free beer if you’re offering it.”
I order a Crisp Apple Okanagan cider and Sapphire orders a Pilsner beer. I have never liked the taste of beer, so I marvel at the fact that my new friend chooses to drink it so freely. We bring our drinks from the bar and to the pit in front of the stage. Eagerly, we wait for the show to begin.
